How to get a CRB Check

Why do I need a CRB check?

Many parents will only hire tutors who have a current CRB check from the Criminal Records Bureau, especially when younger children are involved. Research indicates that tutors are about 10 times more likely to receive a tuition enquiry if they have an enhanced disclosure CRB check.

Please note that current legislation requires all professional tutors, child minders, carers and other professionals who regularly work with children to have an enhanced disclosure CRB check. Please also be aware that as a tutor it is quite meaningless to have or apply for a basic or standard check, because it does not include the required information about work with children.

So where can I get a CRB check?

Some students may already have a CRB check due to voluntary work done at University, although you may need to check whether it’s an enhanced disclosure or not.

If you don’t have one, unfortunately it isn’t possible to apply for a CRB check directly through the Criminal Records Bureau, but we have scouted around a little and found that Work Zone offer one of the cheapest options to allow you to get a CRB check. The £60 they charge for the enhanced check includes £44 for the CRB check itself (this is the statutory fee) and a £16 admin fee which includes VAT.

Once you receive your CRB certificate, you can amend your profile to indicate that you have a CRB certificate available. You also have the option of uploading your CRB certificate. This will allow parents and potential tutees to view it online first, giving them even higher confidence to contact you.

Because of the benefits of having a CRB disclosure we strongly recommend that you consider getting an enhanced CRB check if you are serious about tutoring.
